Lets Improve Ashford!!


Ways to Improve!

            It was over a year ago, I noticed that my life was going basically nowhere. At that point and time I decided that I needed to make a change. After making that decision, I had no idea where to start. The first thing that popped in my head was go back to college. I knew I only had a year to go and finally I could work in a field that I enjoyed. Then the negative thoughts began presenting themselves. How was I going to work and go to school? How am I going to afford it?  Is this really the right thing to do? After talking it over with some of my friends, they then told me about Ashford University. They informed me how it had been such a great fit for them. When I got home I decided to give Ashford a call. I was greeted with a warm reception from an admission counselor. He explained to me that all my credits that I accumulated in the past could possibly transfer. He also told me that it was very affordable and you could complete the schoolwork around your work schedule.
           When I heard the answers to those questions, I knew this was the place for me. I started taking classes within the next two weeks. Now, eight classes later; I must admit attending Ashford is the smartest decision I could’ve ever made. Although I love my decision and I’m on my way to my degree in less than 8 months. There are some areas I noticed that they can improve in. Some of those things are: Effective communication with both teachers and financial aid advisors, and the understanding of the PLA program. In this paper, I present these problems and propose some possible solutions to help the situation.

Problem 1: Communication with the teachers:


Although the communication with teachers isn’t all that bad, it has presented some problems at times. In conducting a survey of ten online Ashford students that I know, 50% of them believe that the communication can be a lot better. The way we communicate with the teachers is thru email. That is fine but sometimes it takes them 2 to 3 days to respond. By that time, your assignment is almost due or due. That leaves you with no insight or guidance from your instructor.

Proposed Solution: A solution that may help is adding some contact numbers. Providing contact numbers to teacher and teacher’s assistants could be a great help. If you give the student a chance to actually talk to someone about their problem, they will feel more satisfied. I know that they will be a high volume of calls, that’s why you would provide contact hours. You also add the reassurance that their call will be returned within 24 hours.

Problem 2: Communication with your financial aid advisor:

This has to be the worst problem that this great university has! In conducting a survey of 10 online Ashford university students, 100% of them find this to be a problem. I have called several times to speak to someone about my financial aid situation. The first thing that is done is the operator after hearing your problem tries to reach your financial aid advisor.  My advisor has never been reached when I call; I always have to speak to someoneelse in the department. The problem with that is; they can’t make any corrections for you. They always say the same thing,   “I’m going to send your advisor and email, and they’re going to contact you”. The earliest I’ve received a response was in two days, if I do receive a response! Sometimes the student’s inquiries require immediate attention.

Proposed solutions: A policy needs to be put in place that when an email is sent to your advisor, you must hear something within 24 hours. Also, how about providing the advisor with an assistant or give a student two advisors. By doing that, the percentage chances go up with reaching someone. It then gives someone else access to make changes to your account, when one person can’t be reached. Another thing that could be done is providing a hotline. Adding a hotline, allows questions to be answered at anytime, even if the school is closed.

Problem 3: Understanding of the Prior Learning Assessment (PLA):

            This program I’ve been told is good but somewhat complicated. When you first are enrolled at the institution, they talk about how you don’t want your past credits to go to waste. They should do the same thing when it comes to the PLA program. There isn’t enough emphasis placed on this program when it comes to enrolling students. When you do finally get someone to talk about it, they just tell you to write a paper and the board determines if you get any extra credits added to your degree progress.

Proposed Solution: Make it mandatory that when an admission advisor tries to get someone enrolled, not only do they talk about past credits. They also need explain this program in depth. This allows someone who may not have ever attended college to know they might have college credit after all. Also, when you speak to your advisor helps you with this process. They just don’t need to send you a link and leave you wondering. It is said to be a good program, how about help it to be utilized.

            In conclusion, Ashford University is a wonderful institution. I would recommend this college to anyone who is looking to further their education.  In saying that we all know that nothing in the world is perfect, so there is always room for improvement. By acknowledging their problems and wanting to work on them proves that this college is worthwhile.  So many other colleges aren’t willing to work with you, when it comes to your needs. Ashford has handled all of mine and many others needs so far. So now is the time for them to tweak certain way how they deal with some of them.
































Mediation and Arbitration!


Resolving Conflict!



            Conflict occurs on an everyday basis, no matter if it’s small or big. When dealing with conflict a lot of us don’t know how to resolve the issue in a positive manner. Two main keys that can help in solving conflict are mediation and arbitration. These two are designed to eliminate any problematic situation you may be dealing with. In this paper, I will tell you how arbitration and mediation function, its role and how it’s considered effective when it comes to conflict resolution. Also, I will explain what the American Arbitration Association is and how it could be use in my current or future career.

            According to the website (Wikipedia. Com), mediation is defined as a way of resolving disputes between two or more parties. A third party, the mediator assists the parties to negotiate their own settlement (facilitative mediation). Arbitration is defined as a is a legal technique for the resolution of disputes outside the courts, where the parties to a dispute refer it to one or more persons (the "arbitrators", "arbiters" or "arbitral tribunal"), by whose decision (the "award") they agree to be bound. Basically the roles of these two things are designed to resolve issues for those who can’t resolve the issues on their own.

            Mediation as a problem solving intervention became more widely used in the late 70’s to the 1980’s.  Professionals in such fields as psychology, law, and social have obtained training and have given themselves the label as mediator. (Parsons, Ruth J. Social Work. New York: Nov 1991. Vol. 36, Iss. 6; p. 483 (5 pages). Mediators play the role as the neutral party when it comes to two or more parties involved in conflict. The function of the mediator is to listen to all sides of the story. The role of the mediator is to be objective to all sides all the time. That allows them to hear the different point of views and get an understanding of that person’s feelings. The effective thing about mediation is, your bringing in an outside person who has nothing to do with the situation. By doing this, the third party won’t be bias or show any favoritism towards any of the parties.

            Arbitration mostly deals with negotiating to settle the dispute. Some of the key words you think of when it comes to arbitration are collective bargaining, cooperation, interest-based bargaining, labor-management relations, constituencies, and power. (McKersie R., Cutcher-Gershenfeld J. Negotiation Journal. New York: Oct 2009. Vol. 25, Iss. 4; p. 499). Most arbitration is dealt with a lawyer within the court system. The function of arbitration is for someone (lawyer) to voice the parties’ opinion for them within a legal manner. The role s to assure the person that their point of view will be heard out no matter what. The effective thing about arbitration is usually all parties usually come away with something to make them somewhat feel satisfied.

            One organization that deals with conflict on a regular basis is the American Arbitration Association (AAA). This association is provides services to individuals and organizations who wish to resolve conflicts out of court. The AAA role in the dispute resolution process is to administer cases, from filing to closing. (http://www.adr.org/about). One of the ways I find that this association can be helpful to me is in my current job situation. I work in a right to work state (Georgia), which means my job can let me go at any particular time for no reason. I also will be unable to obtain unemployment benefits. The reason why I say they could help me is for a long time, I’ve been trying to start a union at my job. If a union was in place, they couldn’t just let me go at a drop of a dime. This association which is designed to appoint mediators, set hearings, help develop unions, corporations, and other government agencies. I would love to have this agency come in and do a seminar just to show me and my fellow co-workers we don’t have to walk around on pins and needles.

            Mediation and Arbitration aren’t big fans of everyone; some believe that they do have negative side effects. In a 1992 study, Dean Shapiro, Ph.D., associate professor of psychiatry and human behavior at UCLA, Irvine, followed 27 people who attended a two-week meditation retreat. During meditation, 17 (62%) reported at least one adverse effect: fear, anxiety, confusion, depression or self-doubt. Just like everything else, nothing in the world is perfect.             In this presentation, I have defined the meanings of both mediation and arbitration. I also explained their function, role, and effectiveness. I introduced you to the American Arbitration Association and explained to you how they could be helpful in my current job. Everyone isn’t going to agree on things all the time and sometimes we do need help solving our problems. I’m a fan of mediation and arbitration because sometimes that third party opens my eyes to different point of views. Always remember if these two techniques don’t help you, sometimes you have to agree to disagree!







Humor and Persuaion in Communications!


A Sense of Humor!

            When trying to change someone’s mind to get them to think what you want to think, there are many ways you can go about doing it. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve studied and learned many theories that people used to do so. One theory that people use on a 50/50 basis is “Humor!” Is this paper I will show how humor can play a role in persuasion in both a positive and negative ways. I will also show how humor has had an effect on other theories of persuasion.

            Humor is defined as a message whose ingenuity or verbal skill or incongruity has the power to evoke laughter. (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rlz=1T4DKUS_enUS284US284&defl=en&q=define:humor). In trying to change someone’s mind, rather you are giving a presentation of just having casual conversation. I’ve learned some traits that you want to posses are assertiveness and confidence. One is yet to think about the trait of Humor. I personally along with many others, see humor as a good ice breaker. In several presentations, a joke or a very humorous hypothetical situation is how I like to start things off. This method not only draws in my audience’s attention and makes them comfortable. It also opens them up and makes them more acceptable to what I have to say.

            According to Dorothy Markiewicz, a professor at Northern Illinois University.  Those concerned with politics, advertising, or rhetoric often suggest that humor enhances the effectiveness of a persuasive message. (Markiewicz 1972 a, b)(http://www.jstor.org/pss/2786391).

            Example: An advertisement that was used in the past and I can honestly say that worked was a commercial. A couple years ago, the beer brand use three talking and singing frogs to sell their product to the public. They caught flies with their tongue and one after another they repeated BUD-Wei-Ser. I found it along with other to be funny and it actually made me wanted to purchase the beer.

            The Psychological Consistency Theories which consist of: Heider’s Balance Theory, Newcomb’s Symmetry Theory, Osgood and Tannebum’s Congruity Theory. These theories share the common assumption that individuals have an innate desire to hold consistent beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. (Seiter, J. S., Gass, R. H. (2004). Perspectives on Persuasion, Social Influence, and Compliance Gaining. Boston: Pearson Education.) I bring these theories into play because ever since Budweiser began using humor to sell their beer and saw the increase in sales. Mostly all of the commercials afterwards have been based upon having some kind o humor in them.

            Though I find humor to be a positive trait when trying to persuade. The use of humor can also have a negative effect when it comes to persuading. One example sports fans may remember is an incident dealing with the basketball king himself Lebron James.
                                                                                                                                  
            Example: Before the upcoming NBA season, Lebron had a huge decision to make about where he would play this season. The front runners were between Cleveland, New York, Miami, and New Jersey. Cleveland the team in which he currently played for and a city which he was born and raised. A team which accommodated him so much they built a new practice facility in front of his mansion so he wouldn’t have to travel far. New York, the Mecca of professional basketball and the city which could offer him the most endorsement money. Miami, a team with already two superstars (D. Wade and C. Bosh (recently signed), and a place where he would have to take a tremendous pay cut. New Jersey, a team owned by good friend and rap pioneer Jay-Z. Lebron held a national press conference where he laughed and joked about the different teams. He ultimately decided to go Miami. The decision caused much uproar and now had James labeled as the new villain of basketball. Some felt he dealt with it the wrong way. What was a joking matter for him; other felt it was a sign of betrayal. His Jerseys was burned and most of his build boards were taken down. In response, to all his recent criticism Lebron made a commercial poking fun at the people with such negative things to say. In a future interview, he said it was suppose to lighten up the situation not make things worse!

            In this paper, I have shown how humor can play both a positive and negative role in persuasion. I also shown you how humor also played a role in some of many different theories we have already learned about in this class. Humor is meant to enlighten the heart but it also is a time and place when you are supposed to use it. Just make sure you’re using it right or you could end up on the wrong side on mountain.

Cultural Experiences Worldwide!

            When you think of America, the first think that comes to your mind is the saying, “Land of the Free and the home of the Brave!” We are considered the country that everyone wants to come too and make a better life. America is now consisted of people from countries, cultures, and ethical backgrounds. Everyone’s journey in life hasn’t all taken the same path. The life journey of Ego Ndukwe has taken a lot of twists and turns. Through it all she has found away to adapt from one culture to another and blend them together.

Mrs. Ego Ndukwe is the person I chose to interview because she comes from a very different background that I’m accustomed too. She is the owner of the company I work for and she also incorporates her culture’s traditions in our everyday work place Mrs. Ndukwe is a native of Nigeria, and has been in America for the past 30 years. Mrs. Ego, on a daily basis expresses the difference between the African and American cultures. Though she states that there are some similarities, most are differences. She states that the Nigerian culture has multiple ethnic groups which speak over 50 languages and 250 dialects. Her culture also reflects African, Islamic, and European influences. The term subculture is defined as a group of people with distinct cultural traits within a culture or society. (Ashford Library, Wordbook Dictionary Advanced, 2010)  She is from the Edo people, who are dominant in the region between Yorubaland and Igboland.  Mrs. Ego is also a wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, business owner, counselor, and friend.

            In a life that has taken Mrs. Ego down many roads, some good and some bad. Her earliest childhood memory is of her father and brothers coming home from hunting in their village. Ego, who is the middle child of nine, recalls her father and siblings returning home with three warthogs. She then described the role of both the men and women after a successful hunt has taken place. The men, after killing the animal, return the kill home to the women. The women, at this time, prepare the water for them, so they can skin the animal. After the skinning and the gutting, the women begin to cook the meat. She also explains the different rituals that took place while the meal was being prepared. She said that they sang numerous songs and her father and uncles continue to show their sons different ways to hunt for someday, they would have to provide for their own families. Ego goes on to explain that Africa is nothing like how it is portrayed on television. She says that everyone has the perception that they run around with no clothes on like untamed animals. She elaborates that most of the time when you see that, there is some kind of celebration going on.

            When Mrs. Ego entered who teenage years she was married at the age of 14. Her marriage was arranged by her father, although she was playmates with her future husband. Ego continued to live in Nigeria for the next six years. Two of those years she was without her husband, because he had left for the United States and would send for her when he could. At the age of 20, she migrated to Dayton, Ohio. Mrs. Ego then discussed how she felt as an immigrant in a new country. Being an immigrant, African, and a woman, she said she felt like a total outcast, not only from whites but from fellow African Americans. She explained that she knew it was going to be challenging, but certain things she endured from different cultures were unbearable. She described a situation where people treated her like she was unintelligent just because of where she was from. She stated how thankful she was it was only she and her husband. If she had kids at the time, she would've considered going home at certain times.       

In migrating, she had to get adjusted to several things to get accommodated to her new country. The first was the geographic and climate change. She went from the average of 90 degree weather, to a cold city of Dayton, Ohio. She recalls the first time she had ever seen snow. She expressed how cold and amazed she was by it. Another was the use of public transportation. In Nigeria, everywhere she needed to go, she walked, so having this was considered a luxury to her. Ego then reveals her first couple of times riding the bus, she got lost. In riding the bus, she noticed the different other cultures that were here. She knew to expect whites and other blacks but what about Hispanics, native Americans, Asians, etc? In discovering the numerous other cultures that were here, she realized the difficulty she was having when it came to communication. She recalls that in her country people from different tribes and villages came together all the time to socialize. She noticed that here in America mostly everyone stuck to their own kind. By people acting this way, it made it hard for her to reach out at times.

            As she began to get adjusted to her new culture, she realized that getting a better education would only help her. She began attending a nearby technical college, where she took special education classes. She explained education between the two countries is treated differently. You become educated in Africa, so you can have a better chance to succeed when you migrate here in America. This is considered an ultimate goal. Compared to the American culture you have more of a choice if you want to further you education. Mrs. Ego also realized by getting a better education, it would help her economic status. By making more money, she would be able to send money back home to her family. Although she says that her family wasn’t considered poor, her economic status was a little better here. She was surprised to learn how people here took education for granted. In Africa, they had to jump over many hurdles just to get the basics of a decent education.

            As she worked on bettering herself, she then began to encourage her husband to start doing the same. He was working two jobs to maintain his family and also to send money back to Nigeria. She had a conversation with him about how they were considered the minority and they needed to do everything they could to succeed. This was important to her because she knew they wanted to start a family soon. She didn’t want to start one, if they were considered to be struggling. It was at this time, she started examining the differences of success between the two cultures. You’re considered a success in Africa, if you grow up get married and have a large family. She noticed that was the equivalent of poverty here. When you’re considered poor here, people look at and treat you differently.

            One of the things, Ego enjoyed most about the move to the states was the different aspects of religion. She feared that her religion (Christian) wouldn’t be accepted here. She discovered that there were followers from various types of religions. In her country, you really didn’t have a choice of what you were going to be. Here in America, there are many places that you can go and worship, you just have to find whatever suits your needs. It was amazing to her, that people of different religions was able to still live together as one society. In having a conversation with her mother at one time she informed her about the different religions she was surrounded by. Her mother, told her not to communicate or become involved with these people in any shape or form. In Africa, people of different religious background don’t associate and some are even at war.      

Family customs was also something that she found intriguing in the American culture. In both the American and African culture the male is still considered the head of the household. Ego embellishes on the roles of women in the households. In Africa, women basically do what they are told and they basically play a minimal role in decisions of the household. The husband finds a suitor for the daughter and makes all major other decisions. Compared to America, there is a little bit more equality for women here. A woman has a chance to pave her own way here. She expressed how she adopted the theory. That didn’t go over well with people from her native land. They felt as if she was forgetting where she was coming from and evolving into someone else. To her, she was adapting to her new culture and society. This hurt communications on many levels for her, family, and friends.

            In making the transition between countries, her biggest problem was catching on to the English language. Though she had learned the language over in Nigeria, she had problems grasping meanings of certain words once she arrived here. She comes from a place where they are so many different languages and dialects. The English language is considered a minority there. Once arriving, she explained how nervous she was to talk. One of the reasons, once they heard her accent they would know that she was a foreigner. Also, she still had problems pronouncing certain words. At one point, she became so insecure when trying to communicate with others; she chose to write down most of her comments. Ego then came across another problem! That was she also couldn’t spell the language that well. What eventually helped her was she began helping new American friends for help of words she found to be difficult. 

English is a West Germanic language that comes from the Anglo-Frisian dialects brought to Britain by Germanic invaders from various parts of what is now northwest Germany and the Netherlands. Initially, Old English was a diverse group of dialects, reflecting the varied origins of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of England.  Ego, mostly spoke the Niger-Congo language. The language consists of in central and southern Nigeria; the main branches represented in Nigeria are Mande, Atlantic, Gur, Kwa, Benue–Congo and Adamawa–Ubangian. Mande is represented by the Busa cluster and Kyenga in the northwest.

            Lastly, Mrs. Ego shared with me the differences of everyday life between the two cultures. One difference is marriage between a man and a woman. She stated that Americans will not hesitate to get a divorce. It almost considered a sin and a curse to do such a thing in the African culture. She feels that people don’t actually mean the words that they say when they get married. This plays a big role in communication between the two cultures because an African might not marry American feeling they may leave at any time. She feels that in the past marriages stuck together unlike today.

            Another is Africans didn’t really care much for African Americans. She stated in the past Africans had the perceptions that African Americans thought they were better than them. She stated that was ignorance on her part. She thought that they didn’t know where they came from. She didn’t realize African Americans are American and they shouldn’t have to act any different. Today she realizes if you’ve never lived in Africa how are you going to act African.

            Her last difference was how the two cultures treat their body. She states that the African does things on a regular basis to purify their bodies. She feels that American cultures just got on board in becoming healthier. For years, they have been doing things to tear down their bodies. The body has always been considered a temple to the African culture and the Americans are just starting to realize the importance of that.

            Final thought, no matter what you may think of your life, someone else’s also has many ups and downs. Adapting to a different culture isn’t always easy; it’s whether you have the heart and strength to do it. Mrs. Ego’s life is very intriguing and it just goes to show the limits one will go through to become a success in life. Life is going to deal you many hurdles in order for you to obtain your dreams. It’s up to you to decide how bad you want it!

Difficult Situation


Difficult Situation!

            In living life, no matter how smoothly it may be going. One will encounter some difficult situations from time to time. These situations can occur in your family, relationships with your significant other, friends and your workplace. The exercise I’m about to break down deals with a situation involving the workplace. I will break down how I would approach this employee, anticipate their response, and explain what communication techniques I would use.

Situation: “You are a department manager in a mid-sized company that provides technology support services. You have ten employees who are required to maintain a high level of technical expertise and deliver excellent customer service. One of your employees, who have been with the company for two years, is performing at a substandard level and you have received numerous complaints from customers and coworkers. In addition, this employee has displayed confrontational behavior which has created a hostile environment. You must now meet with this employee and deliver an ultimatum regarding the need for immediate improvement or dismissal.”

            The approach I would take in this situation is conducting a staff meeting with all ten employees. In the staff meeting, I would inform everyone that I will be meeting with them one on one. The reason for the discussion will be to talk about their individual job performance and what is expected of them. By meeting with everyone and putting it on the table that way, it doesn’t single anyone out. It will let that person know that everyone’s job performance is being evaluated. This begins to identify the problem before it evolves into something else (Abigail & Cahn, 2011, p. 44).   It also allows that person to ask any questions at the time so they know what lies ahead in the meeting. Giving them a chance to do that, allows them to have preparation time for their individual meeting. I would end the meeting with the group by reminding them the success of our company relies on the happiness of our customers.

            In dealing with a situation like this, one has to expect some hostility. Especially from a person who feels they may doing my job correctly and you say otherwise. Dealing with someone like this, you have to remember to stay professional at all times. Even if they become confrontational, staying professional shows them no matter the situation you know how to conduct yourself. Another  is a sense of passiveness. A lot of people hear things but aren’t really receiving it. So you can be handing down some constructive criticism and they aren’t taking it seriously.  The reason for that is they don’t think the inevitable could happen.

            When conducting my one on one meeting, there are a lot of conflict resolution techniques that I feel could be useful.

Technique 1: Practice Assertive Communication-to say what’s on your mind in a way that is clear and assertive, without being aggressive or putting the other person on the defensive. One effective conflict resolution strategy is to put things in terms of how you feel rather than what you think the other person is doing wrong, using ‘I feel’ statements. By doing this, it will allow you to get your point across in a professional manner. It also leaves no room for confusion.

Technique 2: Use of a mediator- The mediator will then help the parties assess the relative merits of the different options and draft an agreement that works best to satisfy everyone’s interests. It is up to the parties, however, to decide whether to accept the final agreement or not. (www.colorado.edu/conflict/peace/treatment/mediatn.htm).

Using a mediator allows the situation to be viewed outside the box. The person will be objective and get an understanding from all sides.

            Difficult situations or conflicts occur on an everyday basis. It’s how we deal with the situation that determines what kind of person we are. Being a communication major, I honestly believe I have what it takes to deal with any situation.

Media Tecnologies!


Media Technologies

We as a society have come a long way when it comes to technology. At one point I time, the most common way to communicate with someone was sending a letter. Well, just in case you were living under a rock for the last 100 years. Those days of being the only form of communication are over. In a brief summary, I will discuss four media technologies that have evolved over the years.

 Radio is the transmission of signals through free space by modulation of electromagnetic waves with frequencies below those of visible light. Radio is one of the first spoken media technologies used across the world. Radio was used to pass on orders and communications between armies and navies on both sides in World War I; Germany used radio communications for diplomatic messages once it discovered that its submarine cables had been tapped by the British. The United States passed on President Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points to Germany via radio during the war. Broadcasting began from San Jose, California in 1909, and became feasible in the 1920s, with the widespread introduction of radio receivers, particularly in Europe and the United States  Today, radio takes many forms, including wireless networks and mobile communications of all types, as well as radio broadcasting.

Before the advent of television, commercial radio broadcasts included not only news and music, but dramas, comedies, variety shows, and many other forms of entertainment. Radio was unique among methods of dramatic presentation in that it used only sound. Radio reaches out to any audience with a vehicle, stereo, internet, or phone. Mobile phones transmit to a local cell site (transmitter/receiver) that ultimately connects to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) through an optic fiber or microwave radio and other network elements. When the mobile phone

nears the edge of the cell site's radio coverage area, the central computer switches the phone to a new cell. Cell phones originally used FM, but now most use various digital modulation schemes. Recent developments in Sweden allow for the instant downloading of digital material from a radio broadcast to a mobile phone. There are new applications on phones that people to be able to choose the station of their choice and listen to it no matter where they are.

Television is a telecommunication medium for transmitting and receiving moving images that can be monochrome (black-and-white) or colored, with or without accompanying sound. In 1927, Philo Farnsworth made the world's first working television system with electronic scanning of both the pickup and display devices, which he first demonstrated to the press on 1 September 1928.WRGB claims to be the world's oldest television station, tracing its roots to an experimental station founded on January 13, 1928, broadcasting from the General Electric factory in Schenectady, NY, under the call letters W2XB.It was popularly known as "WGY Television" after its sister radio station.

Later in 1928, General Electric started a second facility, this one in New York City, which had the call letters W2XBS, and which today is known as WNBC. The two stations were experimental in nature and had no regular programming, as receivers were operated by engineers within the company. The image of a Felix the Cat doll, rotating on a turntable, was broadcast for 2 hours every day for several years, as new technology was being tested by the engineers. (wikipedia.com). Television has a number of uses. First, it makes it possible for us to see what is happening far away. In our homes we watch on television, films or events taking place in other cities, countries and other continents. Technology has advanced so much that you can now look at live television on your phone. It’s only a matter of time I believe that we will be looking at television through or glasses or shades.

The Internet (Microsoft) which is a series of graphical web browsers developed by Microsoft and included as part of the Microsoft Windows line of operating systems. Starting in 1995 is the shortest lived media technology but probably is the most used now. Most traditional communications media including telephone, music, film, and television are reshaped or redefined by the Internet, giving birth to new services such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Internet Protocol Television (IPTV). Newspaper, book and other print publishing are adapting to Web site technology, or are reshaped into blogging and web feeds. The Internet has enabled or accelerated new forms of human interactions through instant messaging, Internet forums, and social networking. Online shopping has boomed both for major retail outlets and small artisans and traders. Business-to-business and financial services on the Internet affect supply chains across entire industries.

Many people use the World Wide Web to access news, weather and sports reports, to plan and book vacations and to find out more about their interests. People use chat, messaging and email to make and stay in touch with friends worldwide, sometimes in the same way as some previously had pen pals. The Internet has seen a growing number of Web desktops, where users can access their files and settings via the Internet. Internet also gives us the prospective to communicate effectively and efficiently. For example, sending an email costs lower than posting a letter in the mail, especially for people who have to communicate internationally. It also provides the environment for news distribution and endorses the people to be updated with the

latest news. We can access the data easily wherever it may be across the world. Internet is also a very good form of communication for people who want to express their own view points and feelings. This form of communication targets any intended audience. Newspapers are a scheduled publication containing news of current events, informative articles, diverse features and advertising.  They are the cheapest medium of information today. Also they are easily available to everybody. Newspapers are an important means of educating people. One of the fruits of the development of science is the Newspaper. This field has grown fast. It links the whole world. Those who read newspapers become well-informed about current affairs. A wide variety of material has been published in newspapers, including editorial opinions, criticism, persuasion and op-eds; obituaries; entertainment features such as crosswords, Sudoku and horoscopes; weather news and forecasts; advice, food and other columns; reviews of radio, movies, television, plays and restaurants; classified ads; display ads, radio and television listings, inserts from local merchants, editorial cartoons, gag cartoons and comic strips.

 The number of copies distributed, either on an average day or on particular days (typically Sunday), is called the newspaper’s circulation and is one of the principal factors used to set advertising rates. Circulation is not necessarily the same as copies sold, since some copies or newspapers are distributed without cost. Readership figures may be higher than circulation figures because many copies are read by more than one person, although this is offset by the number of copies distributed but not read (especially for those distributed free). This would match the audience of who is trying to save money but also trying to stay up to date

Media technology is advancing at a rapid pace! There is no telling what the world is going to be like in the next ten years. I bet in that time they will be no need for anyone to actually be in the same room, because all interactions will be done through technology.

MY FIRST POST!
